ACADEMY AWARDS PREDICTION RESULTS
Fourteen right and ten wrong. Extrapolated out over a major league baseball season, I guess I would be relatively happy, but this was my worst year yet since I have been picking. Of course, I did pick several upsets that didn't pan out, and I guessed in a few categories that I typically (and conveniently) avoid.
DIRECTOR: Damien Chazelle (La La Land)

Of course, I did pick several upsets that didn't pan out, and I guessed in a few categories that I typically (and conveniently) avoid.
Still, it was a tough year all around. Gold Derby, the film site that holds an Oscar prediction contest every year, has around 10,000 entries, and usually, one or two entries will be perfect or near perfect. This year, the winner predicted only 20 of the 24 categories. PICKS I GOT RIGHT

You did pretty well, John. I thought it was interesting that Viola won for Fences and Denzel did not. The pairing was so tight, I don't know how you could recognize one without the other. Agree with you on Inferno. Had to watch it twice to really appreciate how tightly wound Ron Howard made that story and how much detail he put into it. We saw La-La Land and my wife, Sue, actually shrugged her shoulders at the end and thought it would be better.
I do think it's interesting how Hollywood just doesn't make event films for Oscar anymore. Gladiator, Braveheart, Out of Africa have been replaced by Crash, Birdman, and Moonlight. I'm not sure if it's a sign of the times for studios to tighten their belts financially, but it is a trend that I hope swings the other way.

You make a terrific point, and I will be addressing that phenomenon in my next blog post regarding the current state of film criticism.
Have a great weekend, John
